Location of Vineyards
The location of a vineyard will have a significant
influence on its productivity. Vines grown on a mountain
are known for their small crops. Achieving two or three
tons per acre for a vineyard on a mountainside is an
above average accomplishment. Vineyards located on a
valley floor tend to be much more productive because the
vines are usually rooted in richer soils. These
vineyards may be able to produce ten tons of grapes per
acre. The location of the vineyard also will also affect
the quality of the wine produced. The soil, drainage and
amount of exposure to sunlight are taken into account
when determining the right grape variety. The economic
factors must also be taken into account. Because of this
you will not discover Johannesburg Riesling being grown
on a Napa Valley hillside when it will only be worth
about $10 per bottle. The same applies in Bordeaux. In
this region, red wine grapes are plentiful because of
the high values of in demand wines like Merlot and
Cabernet Sauvignon.
